The Manly Co-op are a not-for-profit community owned grocery store, offering bulk and whole foods free from packaging and plastic/waste free.
Challenge: The Manly Co-operative aimed to encourage non-existing members and potential shoppers to become involved with the co-op and shop sustainably. They also aimed to make hesitant one-time shoppers and new customers feel at ease when first visiting the store and being introduced to the unique shopping experience.
Solution: When carrying out in-store visits and observations there was similarity seen between the co-op shopping experience and taking from your own pantry at home. The close and friendly relationships between members were also recognised and comparable to a family. These two insights combined resulted in the family pantry concept : A design direction translating the familiarity of taking from your own kitchen into the ease of shopping sustainably at the manly co-op. This suggests that shopping is easy and comfortable, you’re surrounded by family like figures and it requires familiar and routine actions that would take place in your own home.
